-Hypatia
Hypatia of Alexandria, is consider by many one of the first female scientist in history, at times when women had no place in learning and teaching let along discovering. Hypatia lived an extraordinary life as the pre-eminent mathematician, philosopher, astronomer and astrologer of her time. She was able to rise above the misogyny (the hatred of women) of the time and became one of the most educated and influential people in the known world, a strong supporter of free enquiry. Her brutal murder by a violent and extremist mob is believed by many to symbolize the end of an era of intellectual freedom. She was the daughter of a Famous Mathematician and teacher of the Neoplatonic School of Alexandria, Theon Alexandricus. It is said that she contributed greatly to her father's legacy. She compiled tables of the position of celestial bodies, was a profound orator and defender of the need for questioning every living thing; people traveled to hear her speak, often declaring her to be like her patron Minerva, the goddess of wisdom. She is considered by many to be the first woman to make considerable contributions to the science of mathematics, physics and to the perfection of the astrolabe, an astronomy instrument still use in today's star findings.
